Now this truly is a wonderful architectural thing – the step tank at Hampi. Yet another reason it’s a Unesco heritage site – I really have no idea why it’s not as well known as Anchor Watt.

There are a few impressive step tanks of this sort of ilk scattered over India, but this is the only one I’ve seen myself. It’s basically just a big contained pool with steps in a geometric pattern down to the water. Forgive me if that’s obvious, but I’ve so often shown pictures of this to people and they’ve been utterly stumped as to what it is
